Frugal Usenet vs NewsDemon

Short answer

Pick NewsDemon if you want the cheaper account with longer retention: 5,863 days on UsenetExpress for $0.50 a month for three months, then $30 per 15 months. Pick Frugal Usenet if you want 250 connections and one simple yearly bill: $60 on Netnews, including a 300 GB Blocknews block. They run on different backbones, so you can also use them together.

For most people, NewsDemon is the better single account: it keeps posts for longer and costs less once the intro price ends. Frugal Usenet makes sense if you want a very high connection limit, a month-by-month option with no contract, or one simple yearly price. They run on separate backbones, so using both is also an option.

What they share

  • Both are budget unlimited plans, well below the price of the big Highwinds and Eweka brands.
  • Both list servers in the US and Europe.
  • Neither includes a VPN.
  • Both sell blocks alongside their unlimited plans.

Where they differ

  • Backbone. Frugal Usenet runs on Netnews, the family that also carries Blocknews. NewsDemon runs on UsenetExpress, which it shares with NewsgroupDirect. On the backbone map the two families do not overlap.
  • Takedown rules. NewsDemon follows the US DMCA. We label Netnews as hybrid, so do not treat it as purely DMCA or purely NTD. DMCA vs NTD explains the two main sets of rules.
  • Retention. NewsDemon lists 5,863 days and Frugal Usenet 5,500, a 363-day lead for NewsDemon. Neither comes close to the 6,600-day range of Newshosting or Eweka.
  • Connections. Frugal allows 250, NewsDemon 50.
  • Extras. NewsDemon includes a free newsreader and takes crypto. Frugal's yearly plan comes with a 300 GB Blocknews block.

What you pay

Prices from the official pages, checked on 22 October 2026:

  • Frugal Usenet: $60 a year (about $5.00 a month), with the 300 GB Blocknews block included. Monthly is $5.99, which is also sold as a 30-day pass that does not renew.
  • NewsDemon: $0.50 a month for the first three months, billed monthly, then $30 every 15 months (about $2.00 a month). That $30 covers 15 months, so do not budget for it as a yearly fee.

Over the first 12 months, Frugal costs $60.00. NewsDemon costs $1.50 for the intro plus $30.00 for its first full term, $31.50 in all, and that already takes you to month 18. After the intro, NewsDemon's monthly cost is less than half of Frugal's yearly rate.

Choose Frugal Usenet if…

  • You want 250 connections, for instance to run lots of downloads side by side.
  • You want to pay a month at a time with nothing that renews, using the $5.99 30-day pass.
  • You want a Netnews account next to a UsenetExpress or Highwinds account you already have.
  • The 300 GB Blocknews block is useful to you as extra data on the same network.

Choose NewsDemon if…

  • You want the lower price over the long run.
  • You want roughly a year more of posts.
  • You want to pay with crypto.
  • You want a newsreader included, so you can browse without SABnzbd.
  • Servers in the UK or the Netherlands suit where you live.

Using both: which one goes first

Netnews and UsenetExpress each keep their own stored files, so the second account can find articles the first is missing. Put NewsDemon first. It holds more days of posts, so fewer requests need a second try.

  1. Server 1: news.newsdemon.com, SSL on, priority 0, up to 50 connections.
  2. Server 2: news.frugalusenet.com, SSL on, priority 1, optional.
  3. If you add the Blocknews block, give it priority 2 and mark it optional. It reads the same Netnews files as Frugal, so it only adds data, not coverage.

If you mostly download new releases, the order hardly matters, because both have recent posts. Then you can put Frugal first for its higher connection limit and keep NewsDemon as the backup. The Frugal Usenet and NewsDemon stack works out what the pair costs in year one.

Do not add NewsgroupDirect next to NewsDemon. It reads the same UsenetExpress files and will miss the same articles.

When neither is enough

If old posts fail on both servers, the problem is retention, and both stop well short of 6,600 days. A main account with longer retention, such as Eweka or Newshosting, solves that, with one of these two kept on as the cheaper backup.
